Clear overhead with good moonlight, with a useful NW wind pushing food about with the glass holding level. Start the search at Pike Lake along the calm side of the wind. The day peaks in the morning. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Set in Nipissing District, Ontario, this is Pike Lake. It stands 243 metres above sea level. With some 100 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline length is close to 6.8 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Few waters listed in Nipissing District are bigger. Nearest place of any size is West Nipissing, 22 km away. Sturgeon Falls lies 23 km off, Markstay-Warren another 44 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, cisco and yellow perch. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Pike Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -14°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. It sets the rhythm of the year at Pike Lake.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A campsite is mapped about 500 m away, which makes an early start easier. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. For a change of water, Dolan Lake is 2.4 km distant. Where Pike Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
