Not a cloud worth mentioning today, with a firm WNW blow with the barometer flat. The water to cover at Pig Lake is any hard bottom among the soft. The day runs flat but workable from start to finish. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Kenora District, Pig Lake is an Ontario water. The surface lies 325 metres up. At about 95 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. There is roughly 7.3 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. Kenora sits 36 km from here and is the nearest stop. Beyond it, Lac du Bonnet at 94 km and Moose Lake at 98 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Species logged across Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Fish Pig Lake to its features, not to its size.
Between January at about -18°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. It sets the rhythm of the year at Pig Lake.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No launch point is recorded nearby, so this is a bank water unless you carry a boat in. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Gooseneck Lake sits 1.6 km off and takes the overflow. Treat access at Pig Lake as something to verify.
