Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a whisper of wind from the W with the barometer flat. On Pichogen Lake, work the seam between weed and open water first. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Pichogen Lake is listed under Algoma, Ontario. The land about it is spruce and muskeg. About 1.93 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. With 18 km or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. On our Algoma list it sits near the top for size. Some 66 km away sits Hornepayne, the nearest settlement. Hearst lies 91 km off, Wawa another 116 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Fish documented in Algoma include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Pichogen Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -18°C in January. Open water arrives late and leaves early, which concentrates the fishing. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. It holds true on Pichogen Lake more years than not.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Little Akron Lake sits 4.1 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Pichogen Lake in what we hold.
