Blue sky from bank to bank today, with a consistent blow out of the W with a settled glass. Perch Lake should fish best around inflow corners and shaded margins today. The productive run goes the day. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Perch Lake is one of the Manitoulin District waters in Ontario. The land about it is pine and birch. At some 1.96 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Some 6.6 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Some 9.9 km away sits Little Current, the nearest settlement. Espanola is 43 km and Elliot Lake 72 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Manitoulin District records list rainbow smelt, lake whitefish, cisco and yellow perch among the fish reported. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. Work Perch Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 18°C, while January sits near -10°C. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. The lid tends to go about mid April and return around early December. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Anyone fishing Perch Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Access is unmapped, which usually means a farm track and a walk. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Pike Lake at 4.1 km is the nearest alternative. For Perch Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
