A clear night sky over the water, with mild air moving in from the WNW and pressure going nowhere. On Pack Lake, work shallow cover and weed edges first. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Pack Lake sits in Kenora District, out in Ontario. The bank gives way to mixed forest. With some 34 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. Shoreline comes to about 3.8 km, small enough to learn in a day. Supplies mean a trip to Vermilion Bay, 35 km off. The nearest city of size is Winnipeg, 258 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Fish documented in Kenora District include northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. On Pack Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Expect July near 19°C and January near -17°C on the long-run figures. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around late April. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near mid November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Plan around that when you fish Pack Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Fisher Lake, 3.1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Pack Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
