Sun coming and going behind the cloud today, with a persistent wind from the WNW with a settled glass. Expect most activity at Otter Lake around windblown banks where food collects. A grinding day likely, with the evening worth the effort if any is. Scale down and fish slowly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Otter Lake lies within the bounds of Sudbury, Ontario. This is pine and birch country. With some 25 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The edge runs 2.6 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. For a base, Dowling sits 40 km out. Beyond it, Rayside-Balfour at 45 km and Azilda at 56 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth figures are not published for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Fish documented in Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Otter Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
In an average year July sits at 18°C and January at -15°C. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Anyone fishing Otter Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Overnight stays are possible 1.5 km away. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Bailey Lake, 1.2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Otter Lake in what we hold.
