A day shaped by the wind, with a consistent blow out of the NW with a settled glass. Most of the action on Nicol Lake should come off bays that hold the day's warmth. The strongest window runs from the day. Keep expectations modest and fish carefully. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Nicol Lake belongs to Timiskaming District, Ontario. It lies 304 metres above sea level. It measures about 42 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Roughly 3.5 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. The town to know is Haileybury, 12 km out. Ville-Marie lies 12 km off, Saint-Bruno-de-Guigues another 18 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Public occurrence data for Timiskaming District names brook trout, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Read Nicol Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Expect July to average close to 18°C, with January the cold end at about -16°C. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Nicol Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. If the gate is shut, Chown Lake at 1.2 km is the nearest alternative. Where Nicol Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
