A crisp, open sky after dark, with hardly a ripple anywhere and the barometer holding steady. On Navy Lake, work any hard bottom among the soft first. The forecast backs the stretch from the day. Ride the conditions while they last. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

In Ontario, Navy Lake falls inside Algoma. Elevation runs to 463 metres. With some 100 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. You are looking at roughly 11 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. It ranks high for size among our Algoma listings. The closest town, Elliot Lake, is 53 km distant. Beyond it, Blind River at 81 km and Espanola at 90 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Species logged across Algoma include walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. The near bank of Navy Lake is often the one people ignore.
Between January at about -14°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. At Navy Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Sleepy Lake is 3 km off. Where Navy Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
