Solid cloud cover today, with calm air over the water and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Muir Lake is the first drop-off and weed lines. The forecast is against you; the morning is the least bad option. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Muir Lake is a Thunder Bay District water, in Ontario. The surface lies 309 metres up. It measures about 20 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. With about 4.5 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Nipigon sits 28 km from here and is the nearest stop. The big place round here is Thunder Bay, 102 km distant. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Across Thunder Bay District, recorded fish include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Muir Lake a short move beats a long cast.
Between January at about -16°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Anyone fishing Muir Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Williamson Lake at 1.4 km is the sensible second choice. Check the current arrangement for Muir Lake.
