A grey, even sky over the water, with the surface near flat and the barometer holding steady. Activity on Mud Lake should centre on the calm side of the wind. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Look for Mud Lake in Frontenac County, Ontario. The bank is 242 metres above sea level. Roughly 1.89 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. You are looking at roughly 22 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. Size puts it in the front rank of our Frontenac County list. Nearest town is Sharbot Lake, 25 km off. Perth follows at 50 km, then Renfrew at 60 km. No border sits close enough to matter.
No published figure covers depth, so learn it as you fish. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name pumpkinseed, bluegill, rock bass and smallmouth bass. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Mud Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect July near 19°C and January near -11°C on the long-run figures. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near mid April. Averages place the thaw at mid April and the freeze at early December. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Mud Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Overnight stays are possible about 1.1 km out, where camping is mapped. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Little Green Lake sits 1.5 km off and takes the overflow.
