No cloud to trap the day's warmth tonight, with enough W wind to stack food downwind with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Mud Lake around structure within a cast of the bank. Block out the hours from night into morning. Slow down and let the fish find the bait. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Night
Set in Grey County, Ontario, this is Mud Lake. The ground around here is pine and birch. Around 30 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. Roughly 3.0 km of bank means you can walk to a fresh area when one goes quiet. Markdale at 14 km is the nearest place to stop. Barrie sits 86 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth figures are not published for this one. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Species logged across Grey County include Chinook salmon, rainbow trout, brook trout and white sucker. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Mud Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Temperature averages peak at 19°C in July and bottom out at -8°C in January. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from mid April. On average, mid April opens the water and early December closes it again. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. The season on Mud Lake rarely departs from it.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Overnight stays are possible 1.2 km away. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Hines Lake is 0.8 km off. For Mud Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
