Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a light N breeze with the barometer flat. Mud Lake should fish best around shallow cover and weed edges today. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

You will find Mud Lake in Hastings County, Ontario. The bank is 154 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 58 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The whole outline is near 3.5 km, and most of it is walkable. On our Hastings County list it sits near the top for size. Nearest town is Greater Napanee, 18 km off. Further out sit Napanee (18 km) and Napanee Downtown (18 km). Being near a boundary, it pays to know which side you are fishing.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Reported across Hastings County: rock bass, smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch and bluegill. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Mud Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
The seasonal spread runs -9°C to 20°C. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Break-up near mid April, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. On Mud Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
No access rule appears in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. The water borders Menzel Centennial Provincial Park, so expect the reserve rules to apply. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lime Lake, 5.2 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Mud Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
