An even grey lid over the water, with a light S breeze and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Mud Lake should be near any hard bottom among the soft. A broad window opens from the day. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Look for Mud Lake in Durham, Ontario. Elevation runs to 231 metres. It runs to roughly 25 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 2.7 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Ontario listings. For a base, Mount Albert sits 11 km out. Uxbridge follows at 13 km, then Ballantrae at 20 km. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name brook trout, white sucker, Chinook salmon, rainbow trout and pumpkinseed. Protected fish appear in the records for this area, so treat the list as information, not an invitation. The shape of Mud Lake decides where the fish sit.
Average temperature peaks around 20°C in July and bottoms out near -8°C in January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. The lid usually goes in mid April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. Open water usually runs from mid April until about mid December. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. On Mud Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Island Lake, 17 km away. Nothing here settles the position at Mud Lake for certain.
