A grey, even sky over the water, with steady pressure of wind from the W and pressure sitting still. The productive water at Mud Lake will be around any hard bottom among the soft. Plan around the stretch from the day. Keep moving until you find them. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Look for Mud Lake in the Renfrew County part of Ontario. The land about it is rolling bush. About 6 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. Supplies mean a trip to Eganville, 14 km off. It is 113 km to Nepean, the nearest city. This one is safely inside the county line.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Public occurrence data for Renfrew County names smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, rock bass and brook trout. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Mud Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -12°C in January. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. The open-water window runs from around late April to about early December in an average year. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. That is the shape of the year on Mud Lake.
The access position is unclear from public sources. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. For a change of water, Meadow Lake is 2.9 km distant. Check the current arrangement for Mud Lake.
