A closed sky with even light today, with a soft SSW wind and pressure sitting still. On Mud Lake, work the seam between weed and open water first. One clear peak today: the evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Algoma in Ontario is where Mud Lake sits. The country here is rolling bush. The water covers some 15 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The full circuit measures close to 2.4 km on foot. Nearest town is Elliot Lake, 37 km off. Blind River follows at 62 km, then Thessalon at 83 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Survey and observation records for Algoma include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Fish Mud Lake to its features, not to its size.
Typical July readings run about 18°C; by January the average is down near -13°C. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. The season on Mud Lake follows the weather closely.
No access rule appears in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. The map shows no ramp or car park nearby, so this is a walk-in water. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Failing this one, try Tee Lake, 1.3 km away. Check the position on Mud Lake before loading the car.
