Clear overhead with good moonlight, with almost no wind to speak of with the barometer flat. The water to cover at Much Lake is inflow corners and shaded margins. The productive run goes morning through afternoon. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Ontario holds Much Lake, in Sudbury. The country round it is spruce and muskeg from end to end. With some 61 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The edge covers about 8.9 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. It sits higher than most water we list in Ontario. Head to Chapleau, 40 km away, for anything you forgot. Then Wawa, 72 km, and Sault Ste. Marie, 136 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Records held for Sudbury cover smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The shape of Much Lake decides where the fish sit.
The seasonal spread runs -15°C to 16°C. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. At Much Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Rules for this water may differ from the county norm. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. If the gate is shut, Ration Lake at 0.8 km is the nearest alternative. Check the position at Much Lake before loading the car.
