A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the W and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Mountney Lake should be near any hard bottom among the soft. The strongest window is the middle of the day. Stay patient; middling days often turn late. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Lennox and Addington County, Mountney Lake is an Ontario water. This is rolling bush country. It runs to roughly 21 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline comes to about 2.8 km, small enough to learn in a day. Eganville lies 42 km from the water. Kingston sits 123 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The county edge is within a short distance of the bank.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Lennox and Addington County include pumpkinseed, rock bass and smallmouth bass. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. On Mountney Lake that means starting tight and working out.
The range across the year is -12°C to 18°C. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. On average, late April opens the water and early December closes it again. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Mountney Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Dry Lake at 1.2 km is the nearest alternative. What applies at Mountney Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
