Dull, settled light over the water, with a steady W wind with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Mountain Lake should come off the seam between weed and open water. A broad window opens from morning through afternoon. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Mountain Lake is a Peterborough County water, Ontario side. This is lake country bush ground. With some 20 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The whole outline is near 2.0 km, and most of it is walkable. The closest town, Bobcaygeon, is 22 km distant. It is 96 km to Oshawa, the nearest city. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Survey and observation records for Peterborough County include rock bass, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass and muskellunge. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Mountain Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Between January at about -10°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from mid April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around mid April and starts locking again about early December. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Anyone fishing Mountain Lake regularly works to that calendar.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Horseshoe Lake, 2.5 km away. Where Mountain Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
