A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a busy WNW wind on the open water and pressure sitting still. On McLachlin Lake, work the calm side of the wind first. A long productive spell runs the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

McLachlin Lake is a Nipissing District water, Ontario side. It stands 338 metres above sea level. At roughly 5 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Nipissing District. Supplies mean a trip to United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde, 53 km off. Bancroft is 53 km away, with Petawawa at 65 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Survey and observation records for Nipissing District include smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch, pumpkinseed and rock bass. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Treat McLachlin Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
The year swings from about -13°C in January to roughly 18°C in July. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Count the season from break-up, usually late April. The season between ice runs from about late April to late November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Plan around that when you fish McLachlin Lake.
Public data does not answer the access question here. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. If the gate is shut, Bear Lake at 2.9 km is the nearest alternative. Where McLachlin Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
