Overcast skies today, with a steady WNW wind and steady pressure. Give windblown banks where food collects the first hour at McKellar Lake. Even, unhurried fishing on the cards. Change depth before you change anything else. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Look for McKellar Lake in the Kenora District part of Ontario. Beyond the shoreline you have pine and birch. Roughly 2.59 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. Shoreline length is close to 14 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Vermilion Bay lies 42 km from the water. It is 237 km to Winnipeg, the nearest city. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Kenora District records list northern pike, longnose sucker, white sucker, johnny darter and logperch among the fish reported. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. The shape of McKellar Lake decides where the fish sit.
Typical July readings run about 19°C; by January the average is down near -18°C. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan around that when you fish McKellar Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. If the gate is shut, Clear Lake at 2.4 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for McKellar Lake in what we hold.
