Clear overhead with good moonlight, with a gentle ripple from the W with the barometer flat. On McCool Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. The day fishes best from afternoon into evening. Pick two or three spots and rotate them. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

McCool Lake is an Algoma water, Ontario side. The bank is 351 metres above sea level. At some 1.36 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Shoreline length is close to 9.7 km, and each section fishes a little differently. It ranks high for size among our Algoma listings. Elliot Lake at 18 km is the nearest place to stop. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 109 km distant. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Across Algoma, recorded fish include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Treat McCool Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -12°C. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly late November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. McCool Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Failing this one, try Clayton Lake, 1.5 km away. For McCool Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
