An even grey lid over the water, with stillness over the whole water with a settled glass. On May Lake, work inflow corners and shaded margins first. The forecast is against you; the middle of the day is the least bad option. Short, focused sessions beat a long grind today. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

In Ontario, May Lake belongs to Sudbury. The bank gives way to northern bush. It runs to roughly 26 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. With about 2.8 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. Compared with other Ontario water on our list, it sits high. Chapleau sits 12 km from here and is the nearest stop. After that come Wawa at 113 km and Sault Ste. Marie at 160 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Sudbury records list smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. May Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
The seasonal spread runs -16°C to 17°C. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. At May Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
The access position is unclear from public sources. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. The nearest alternative is Earl Lake, 0.8 km out. Ask locally about May Lake if anything is unclear.
