A windy day on the water, with a consistent blow out of the WNW with the barometer flat. Start the search at Marron Lake along windblown banks where food collects. Little to get excited about, though the morning holds a sliver of promise. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Marron Lake stands in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. It sits in spruce and muskeg country. With some 31 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The full circuit measures close to 3.0 km on foot. Geraldton sits 8.3 km from here and is the nearest stop. Greenstone lies 13 km off, Longlac another 37 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Marron Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near -20°C. Everything is compressed into the middle of the year. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Climate averages put the opening at about early May and the closing near mid November. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Plan around that when you fish Marron Lake.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. The nearest alternative is Longacre Lake, 2 km out. Rules at Marron Lake are worth checking on the day.
