No cloud to trap the day's warmth tonight, with a consistent blow out of the W and no real change in pressure. Expect most activity at Maple Lake around the margins and the shelf beyond them. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the evening. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Maple Lake is one of the Algoma waters in Ontario. Everything around it is mixed forest. It runs to roughly 13 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Around 1.9 km of margin, front to back. Our Algoma list holds plenty of bigger water. Sault Ste. Marie sits 26 km from the bank. The nearest city of size is Greater Sudbury, 247 km away. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Algoma include walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Maple Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -12°C in January. A hard winter is normal, and the thaw brings a strong few weeks. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. In an average year the thaw lands around late April and the freeze near late November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. It holds true on Maple Lake more years than not.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. The nearest alternative is Quinn Lake, 0.9 km out. What applies at Maple Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
