Scattered cloud dimming the moonlight, with next to no ripple with the barometer flat. Give the seam between weed and open water the first hour at Lumby Lake. Plan around the stretch from afternoon into evening. Keep moving until you find them. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lumby Lake lies in Rainy River District, Ontario. Elevation runs to 448 metres. Surface area is around 66 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. You are looking at roughly 6.8 km of shoreline, with plenty of water between access points. It is high ground by Ontario standards. Nearest place of any size is Atikokan, 38 km away. Thunder Bay is the closest city, 168 km away. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Rainy River District records list northern pike, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and walleye among the fish reported. Take it as the county picture rather than a promise for this water. Anyone new to Lumby Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Typical July readings run about 18°C; by January the average is down near -18°C. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Plan any trip to Lumby Lake around it.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Bark Lake at 1.1 km is the nearest alternative. For Lumby Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
