Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a light S breeze and the barometer holding steady. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Long Lake. The strongest window is the morning. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Long Lake is a Renfrew County water, Ontario side. It sits in mixed forest. It runs to roughly 17 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.0 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Ontario listings. Some 19 km away sits Pembroke, the nearest settlement. The nearest city of size is Gatineau, 125 km away. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow perch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Treat Long Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Averages move between -13°C in January and 19°C in July. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near early December: that is the shape of an average year. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. Plan around that when you fish Long Lake.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Red Rock Lake, 1 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Long Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
