A clear night sky over the water, with a steady NW wind with the glass holding level. Expect most activity at Loch Macdougall around the shallows early and the drop later. Not a day the forecast likes; the morning keeps a flicker of interest. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

The Thunder Bay District end of Ontario holds Loch Macdougall. The bank is 458 metres above sea level. At some 1.36 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Shoreline length is close to 8.9 km, and each section fishes a little differently. It is high ground by Ontario standards. The closest town, Lappe, is 71 km away. It is 83 km to Thunder Bay, the nearest city. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Our records hold no depth for this water. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Fish documented in Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Loch Macdougall fishes better once you know its edges.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -18°C in January. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. The season on Loch Macdougall rarely departs from it.
No access rule appears in what we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Bowes Lake, 1.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Loch Macdougall, the notice at the access point is the final word.
