Solid cloud cover today, with a helpful ripple pushed from the WNW with the barometer flat. Activity on Little Vein Lake should centre on points where shallow meets deep. A tough forecast; the middle of the day offers the only real chance. Keep baits small and presentations quiet. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Night
Look for Little Vein Lake in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. Height above sea level is 316 metres. Roughly 38 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The full circuit measures close to 4.5 km on foot. Manitouwadge sits 34 km from the bank. Further out sit Longlac (62 km) and Geraldton (72 km). The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Across Thunder Bay District, recorded fish include cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt, bloater and shortjaw cisco. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. On Little Vein Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and January near -17°C. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. Ice-out usually falls in early May, and the weeks after it fish hardest. The lid tends to go about early May and return around mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Expect Little Vein Lake to follow that timing.
Our records carry no access rule either way. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Should this one be busy, Stiletto Lake is 1.5 km off. What applies at Little Vein Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
