Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a gentle ripple from the NNW and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Little Cauchon Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. Make the morning the heart of the trip. A careful, quiet approach will out-fish a busy one.

Little Cauchon Lake is a Nipissing District water, Ontario side. The bank is 321 metres above sea level. Roughly 2.69 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. It ranks high for size among our Nipissing District listings. Start from Mattawa, 29 km down the road. After that come Powassan at 54 km and Callander at 58 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, cisco, yellow perch, pumpkinseed and rock bass. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Little Cauchon Lake decides where the fish sit.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 18°C, while January sits near -13°C. Hard water is a season in its own right here. The lid usually goes in late April, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. On Little Cauchon Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
We hold no note on access for this one. You can camp 240 m off, which suits an early start. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Should this one be busy, Windermere Lake is 1.2 km off. The position on Little Cauchon Lake is worth confirming on the day.
