Flat light and a covered sky today, with a decent W wind working the banks with the glass holding level. Fish at Kings Lake should hold close to the first drop-off and weed lines. The best of it runs the day. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Set in Renfrew County, Kings Lake is an Ontario water. The water sits 315 metres up. A pocket of water where every cast reaches cover. It is a small entry by Renfrew County standards. The town to know is Eganville, 32 km out. Renfrew is 44 km away, with Cobden at 48 km. Water in the same corner: Brule Lake at 1.5 km, Muskrat Lake (3.2 km), Jocko Lake at 3.5 km, Brule Lake (4.3 km) and Godin Lake at 4.5 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Survey and observation records for Renfrew County include smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch and rock bass. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Kings Lake that means starting tight and working out.
The range across the year is -12°C to 19°C. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near early December. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. The season on Kings Lake follows the weather closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing is listed nearby for parking or launching a boat. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Brule Lake, 1.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Kings Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
