Strong air moving over the water all day, with enough WNW wind to limit the options and the barometer holding steady. The water to cover at King Lake is reed fringes and open pockets. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

King Lake stands in Thunder Bay District, Ontario. This is lake country bush country. Around 18 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. The whole outline is near 2.7 km, and most of it is walkable. By elevation it sits in the lower part of our Ontario listings. The nearest place of any size is Terrace Bay, 16 km away. Further out sit Schreiber (26 km) and Nipigon (100 km). It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Thunder Bay District records list cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt among the fish reported. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Anyone new to King Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Average temperature peaks around 15°C in August and bottoms out near -11°C in January. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Climate figures give an open season running late April to late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Plan any trip to King Lake around it.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Slate Islands Provincial Park runs up to the bank here, which usually means extra restrictions. Keep the gear simple: light line, small hooks, split shot and a couple of proven lures. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. If the gate is shut, Peninsula Lake at 0.9 km is the nearest alternative. Check the current arrangement for King Lake.
