Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with next to no ripple and the barometer holding steady. Expect most activity at Kilgour Lake around sheltered bays and points. A hard day on paper; the evening edges the rest. Lower the pace and stay patient. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Kilgour Lake is one of the Thunder Bay District waters in Ontario. Elevation runs to 441 metres. It runs to roughly 96 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The perimeter runs near 7.8 km, so plan the walk before you start. By elevation it is in the upper part of our Ontario listings. Start from Nipigon, 37 km down the road. Schreiber lies 66 km off, Greenstone another 76 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Species logged across Thunder Bay District include cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Kilgour Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Climate records put July near 16°C and January near -18°C. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. Winter fishing happens on the ice here, with open water back around early May. Expect the water usable from around early May until roughly mid November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. It holds true on Kilgour Lake more years than not.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Stein Lake sits 2.1 km off and takes the overflow. Ask locally about Kilgour Lake if anything is unclear.
