Heavy overcast holding through the day, with just enough W wind to ripple the surface and the barometer holding steady. Start the search at Keel Lake along reed fringes and open pockets. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Keel Lake belongs to Sudbury, Ontario. Height above sea level is 453 metres. The water covers some 16 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. The bank runs about 2.9 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Sudbury list. Start from Chapleau, 32 km down the road. After that come Wawa at 78 km and Hornepayne at 153 km. One jurisdiction covers this water end to end.
The records we hold are silent on depth, so plan to find it yourself. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Public occurrence data for Sudbury names smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch and Iowa darter. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Work Keel Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Between January at about -16°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. A short, intense season is the rule this far north. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near mid November in autumn. June through September is the settled part of the year, with the shoulders busier for fish. At Keel Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Slash Lake, 2.8 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Keel Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
