An even grey lid over the water, with dead-still conditions and steady pressure. Expect most activity at Jackson Lake around the first drop-off and weed lines. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Out in Thunder Bay District, Ontario, sits Jackson Lake. It lies 301 metres above sea level. Roughly 1.50 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. At about 15 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Size puts it in the front rank of our Thunder Bay District list. Greenstone is the closest place, 58 km off. Geraldton is 70 km away, with Longlac at 94 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Records held for Thunder Bay District cover cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Anyone new to Jackson Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Climate normals give 16°C for July and -20°C for January. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Jackson Lake.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Todd Lake, 3.8 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Jackson Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
