A grey, even sky over the water, with the water lying quiet with a settled glass. Fish at Iron Lake should hold close to shallow cover and weed edges. Expect the better fishing from afternoon into evening. Give the likely spots time before moving. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Algoma, Iron Lake is an Ontario water. Around the bank it is lake country bush. It runs to roughly 27 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline comes to about 3.0 km, small enough to learn in a day. The town to know is Sault Ste. Marie, 38 km out. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 251 km distant. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. County-wide records name walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter, yellow perch and white sucker. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. Fish Iron Lake to its features, not to its size.
Expect July near 17°C and January near -12°C on the long-run figures. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late April. Break-up near late April, freeze-up near late November: that is the shape of an average year. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. The season on Iron Lake follows the weather closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Failing this one, try Upper Sheppard Lake, 1.6 km away. None of that is settled for Iron Lake in what we hold.
