A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a persistent wind from the NW and no real change in pressure. Most of the action on Iris Lake should come off windblown banks where food collects. Everything points to the evening. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Iris Lake is a Thunder Bay District water, Ontario side. The bank is 400 metres above sea level. At about 40 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The whole outline is near 4.8 km, and most of it is walkable. Nipigon is the closest town at 63 km. Lappe lies 72 km off, Amethyst Harbour another 74 km. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Reported across Thunder Bay District: cisco, blackfin cisco, rainbow smelt and bloater. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Treat Iris Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Long-term averages put July at about 17°C and January near -19°C. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly early May. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Plan around that when you fish Iris Lake.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Access points are not mapped for this water, which suits people who like quiet. A light spinning outfit with a small box of lures and some bait covers most of what swims here. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Amos Lake at 1.5 km is the sensible second choice. For Iris Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
