Clear air and long views across the water tonight, with a proper ripple driven from the W and the barometer holding steady. Start the search at Index Lake along reed fringes and open pockets. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Index Lake falls in Parry Sound District, part of Ontario. The bank gives way to mixed forest. With some 23 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. With about 3.6 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. Head to Sturgeon Falls, 61 km away, for anything you forgot. Parry Sound is 62 km and West Nipissing 62 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is unmeasured here, so let the shoreline guide you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Parry Sound District, recorded fish include smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, northern pike and rock bass. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Index Lake a short move beats a long cast.
On the long-term average, July reads 19°C and January reads -10°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid April. The season between ice runs from about mid April to early December. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Index Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. Should this one be busy, Cross Lake is 1.1 km off. Where Index Lake is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
