A clean, cloudless night over the water, with next to no ripple and pressure going nowhere. Most of the action on Hospital Lake should come off shallow cover and weed edges. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Ontario holds Hospital Lake, in Algoma. The land about it is spruce and muskeg. Roughly 18 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. The whole outline is near 3.1 km, and most of it is walkable. Nearest town is Chapleau, 82 km off. It is 259 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Algoma records list walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter among the fish reported. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. On Hospital Lake that means starting tight and working out.
Long-run averages give July about 17°C and January about -17°C. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Hospital Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Our records carry no access rule either way. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. The nearest alternative is Shiners Lake, 4.6 km out. For Hospital Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
