Open sky and sharp air tonight, with a faint WNW drift and steady pressure. The water to cover at Hilly Lake is the first drop-off and weed lines. One clear peak today: the evening. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Night
Hilly Lake is a Kenora District water, in Ontario. This is pine and birch ground. Roughly 63 hectares: a morning covers one end, an afternoon the other. Some 6.2 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Head to Kenora, 8.6 km away, for anything you forgot. Beyond it, Vermilion Bay at 72 km and Moose Lake at 91 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
Our records hold no depth for this water. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Hilly Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Average temperature peaks around 19°C in July and bottoms out near -17°C in January. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer and winter test it. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about mid November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Hilly Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. The nearest alternative is Breakneck Lake, 2.2 km out. None of that is settled for Hilly Lake in what we hold.
