Scattered cloud dimming the moonlight, with mild air moving in from the SSW and no real change in pressure. Whatever swims in Higher Lake should be near points where shallow meets deep. The productive run goes the day. Start on the obvious water and expand from there. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Higher Lake is set in Algoma, Ontario. It stands 422 metres above sea level. With some 66 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The bank runs about 4.8 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Supplies mean a trip to Thessalon, 80 km off. Greater Sudbury sits 195 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name walleye, northern pike, Iowa darter and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Read Higher Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Seasonal averages run from -13°C in January up to 17°C in July. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. The open-water window runs from around late April to about late November in an average year. Just after the ice goes and just before it returns, the fishing lifts. Higher Lake fishes to that pattern most years.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Foref Lake at 1.4 km is the sensible second choice. Nothing on Higher Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
