Flat light and a covered sky today, with a busy SW wind on the open water and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Head Lake should be near reed fringes and open pockets. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Head Lake sits within Haliburton County in Ontario. The water sits 315 metres up. It measures about 63 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Around 4.8 km of margin, front to back. The closest town, Haliburton Village, is 0.6 km away. After that come United Townships of Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde at 19 km and Bancroft at 52 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Records held for Haliburton County cover smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, rock bass and yellow perch. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Head Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Typical July readings run about 19°C; by January the average is down near -11°C. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. Winter locks it down, and mid April brings it back. The open-water window runs from around mid April to about early December in an average year. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. On Head Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. A slipway 420 m out gives trailer access. You can leave the car about 320 m from the water. A jetty or pier is mapped about 200 m from here. There are picnic tables recorded roughly 270 m off. A toilet block sits 430 m away. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. For a change of water, Barnum Lake is 2.6 km distant. Treat Head Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
