Thin cloud passing over the water tonight, with a decent WSW wind working the banks with a settled glass. Give the first drop-off and weed lines the first hour at Hazel Lake. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

The Parry Sound District entry here is Hazel Lake, in Ontario. The surroundings are mixed forest. It runs to roughly 11 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The bank runs about 2.0 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. It is low-lying compared with other Ontario water we list. Powassan lies 32 km from the water. Further out sit Callander (34 km) and Sturgeon Falls (34 km). No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Survey and observation records for Parry Sound District include smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, yellow perch, northern pike and rock bass. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Hazel Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
Expect July to average close to 19°C, with January the cold end at about -12°C. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. From about late April to around early December, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. It holds true on Hazel Lake more years than not.
Access is not recorded for this water. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A made slipway is 1.3 km from here, which settles the boat question. The car has to stay 1.3 km away, which shapes how much tackle you bring. Fishing from a pier is possible 1.3 km away. A picnic spot sits 1.2 km from the bank. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Should this one be busy, Stormy Lake is 1.2 km off. Nothing here settles the position at Hazel Lake for certain.
