Wind pushing hard across the water today, with a consistent blow out of the NW with a settled glass. Whatever swims in Hale Lake should be near windblown banks where food collects. Little to get excited about, though the evening holds a sliver of promise. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly.

Hale Lake is one of the Cochrane District waters in Ontario. Elevation runs to 224 metres. At about 84 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Around 3.8 km of margin, front to back. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. The town to know is Longlac, 249 km out. Thunder Bay is the closest city, 434 km away. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Cochrane District, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, Iowa darter and logperch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Read Hale Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
The year swings from about -22°C in January to roughly 16°C in July. Cold dominates the calendar on water this far north. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid May. Averages suggest open water from about mid May through to roughly early November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. That is the shape of the year on Hale Lake.
Access status is simply unknown for this water. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No made access is recorded, so a short walk in is the likely arrangement. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. If the gate is shut, Tillett Lake at 9.4 km is the nearest alternative. The position on Hale Lake is worth confirming on the day.
