An even grey lid over the water, with a decent WSW wind working the banks with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Gut Lake should come off any hard bottom among the soft. Not a day the forecast likes; the morning keeps a flicker of interest. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short.

Gut Lake lies in Sudbury, Ontario. The bank is 185 metres above sea level. With some 11 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. About 2.8 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. It is a small entry by Sudbury standards. The closest town, Markstay-Warren, is 61 km distant. Greater Sudbury is the closest city, 72 km away. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Survey and observation records for Sudbury include smallmouth bass, northern pike and yellow perch. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. The shape of Gut Lake rewards a slow walk along one bank.
The year swings from about -10°C in January to roughly 19°C in July. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Break-up comes around mid April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Open water usually runs from mid April until about early December. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. It sets the rhythm of the year at Gut Lake.
We hold no note on access for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Parking within 400 m means no long carry with tackle. Public data records a pier about 370 m out. Anglers are recorded at Smokey Point, roughly 330 m off. Mapping records toilets within 360 m. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Gurd Lake at 1.1 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position on Gut Lake before loading the car.
