Cloud coming and going through the night, with flat calm through the day and pressure going nowhere. Great Mountain Lake should fish best around shallow cover and weed edges today. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Great Mountain Lake sits within Greater Sudbury in Ontario. The setting is pine and birch. It measures some 2.05 sq km, and wind has room to build across it. Some 16 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Size puts it in the front rank of our Greater Sudbury list. Start from Espanola, 33 km down the road. Lively lies 35 km off, Greater Sudbury another 46 km. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name smallmouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike, pumpkinseed and rock bass. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Great Mountain Lake fishes better once you know its edges.
Between January at about -11°C and July at about 19°C, the water has a wide range to work through. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. Expect the water usable from around late April until roughly early December. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. That is the shape of the year on Great Mountain Lake.
Public sources are silent on who controls the bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A campsite is mapped about 1.3 km away, which makes an early start easier. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Should this one be busy, Gail Lake is 1.4 km off. Signs at Great Mountain Lake carry more weight than any list.
