No cloud to trap the day's warmth tonight, with a busy WNW wind on the open water with a settled glass. On Gravel Lake, work the weed line and any gaps in it first. The day holds up well from night into morning. Let the water tell you when to move. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Gravel Lake is an Algoma water, Ontario side. The surface lies 291 metres up. It runs to roughly 20 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 2.5 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Wawa is the closest place, 34 km off. After that come Chapleau at 116 km and Sault Ste. Marie at 141 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Algoma include walleye, northern pike and Iowa darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Gravel Lake decides where the fish sit.
Long-run averages give July about 16°C and January about -12°C. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about late November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. Anyone fishing Gravel Lake regularly works to that calendar.
We hold no note on access for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Public mapping records no formal access here, so plan for a walk and soft ground. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Sort the permit out before you load the car. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Failing this one, try Chalmers Lake, 1.6 km away. What applies at Gravel Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
