A mix of sun and cloud over the water, with a consistent blow out of the NW with the glass holding level. On Granite Lake, work structure within a cast of the bank first. The day runs flat but workable from start to finish. Take the steady approach over the searching one. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Kenora District in Ontario is where Granite Lake sits. Around the bank it is pine and birch. The water covers around 1.38 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. Shoreline length is close to 9.2 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Nearest place of any size is Kenora, 28 km away. Beyond it, Moose Lake at 64 km and Warroad at 95 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
We hold no depth figure for this one. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Records held for Kenora District cover northern pike, longnose sucker and white sucker. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The shape of Granite Lake decides where the fish sit.
Averages move between -18°C in January and 19°C in July. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about late April until roughly mid November. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. Plan around that when you fish Granite Lake.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. There is a marina 600 m away for anyone bringing a boat. Expect a 800 m walk in from where the car goes. A pier or jetty stands 90 m away, which helps on a crowded bank. There is a campsite 770 m from the water. A picnic spot sits 670 m from the bank. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. For a change of water, Ridge Lake is 2.1 km distant. What applies at Granite Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
