Flat light and a covered sky today, with enough WNW wind to stack food downwind and pressure going nowhere. Activity on Glaze Lake should centre on the shallows early and the drop later. Numbers are low everywhere; the night is the pick of them. Scale down and fish slowly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Glaze Lake is one of the Thunder Bay District listings for Ontario. Country round the bank runs to spruce and muskeg. At 1.46 sq km this is proper open water rather than a pond. Some 8.0 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Longlac lies 137 km from the water. Geraldton is 144 km away, with Greenstone at 146 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Public occurrence data for Thunder Bay District names cisco, blackfin cisco and rainbow smelt. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. At Glaze Lake the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -21°C on the long-run figures. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. The season between ice runs from about early May to early November. The shoulder weeks of the open season are the productive ones. At Glaze Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. One rod, a handful of hooks and floats, and a few small lures are enough for this water. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Byford Lake sits 3.2 km off and takes the overflow. What applies at Glaze Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
