A blustery day over the water, with a firm WSW blow with the barometer flat. Expect most activity at Gillies Lake around inflow corners and shaded margins. The night carries the best of the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Out in Bruce County, Ontario, sits Gillies Lake. Pine and birch runs right down to the water. Roughly 2.07 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. The shoreline runs about 11 km, so it pays to pick a stretch and stay with it. On our Bruce County list it sits near the top for size. Tobermory at 26 km is the nearest place to stop. Wiarton is 54 km and Owen Sound 77 km. No county line comes close, which keeps the paperwork simple.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Reported across Bruce County: smallmouth bass, lake whitefish, humpback whitefish and rainbow smelt. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. The near bank of Gillies Lake is often the one people ignore.
Seasonal averages run from -7°C in February up to 19°C in July. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid April. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid April in spring and again near mid December in autumn. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Expect Gillies Lake to follow that timing.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A campsite lies 990 m away for anyone staying over. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Lymburner Lake sits 2 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Gillies Lake in what we hold.
