Uneven cloud over the water after dark, with stillness over the whole water and steady pressure. French Lake should fish best around windblown banks where food collects today. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Look for French Lake in Cochrane District, Ontario. The ground round it is taiga. It runs to roughly 34 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. A shoreline of some 3.4 km keeps the choices simple. It lies lower than most water we list in Ontario. The closest town, Hearst, is 15 km away. Greater Sudbury is the closest city, 422 km away. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Cochrane District: northern pike, yellow perch and white sucker. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Read French Lake for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Typical July readings run about 16°C; by January the average is down near -19°C. Long winters and short summers set the pattern. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from early May. From about early May to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. That is the shape of the year on French Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Hanlan Lake at 4.7 km is the sensible second choice. For French Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
